I went a bought a second YJ (for the misses LOL) ::) and it's the older 4.2 6 Cyl. My question is I don't know what trans or transfer case is under it. Can any tell me?? I haven't taken the time to climb under it and read it. Let me know and thanks in advance!! ;D

Hi Steve,
My 89 has a AX15 and 231.
-
well, the transfer case is either a np 207 or np 231 (check tag), and if its has a manual trans it's an ax15 after 3/89 or GOD FORBID a peugot BA10 if it was built before march 1989. so if its a side split clamshell case (trans comes apart into left and right sides) then sorry about your luck. i had one i my 87 and they are weak as hell - all its good for is a big paperweight or boat anchor. dont rebuild it, replace it w/an ax15 or nv3550 WHEN it goes, cause trust me it will go.
-
its an automatic....
-
lucky you...it's a TF999.
-
Yeah, the 999 is a durable piece.

Thank you guys, this is for the misses and I know the newer Yj's but not that informed about the older 4.2 Yj's....thanks.
And if I'm correct they are a dana 35 non C-clip correct??
-
Mine was the non C-clip.
-
Yup no clip - 87 to 89 didn't use them, only 90 and up.
And to think my dad thought reading all those jeep books and magazines was a waste of time... ;D
