Title: May seem a bit daft, but ....
Post by: SteveTheFolkie on October 31, 2010, 10:07:27 am
Has any one mounted a spare tire to the HOOD of their XJ, the way vintage land rovers carried them?  I was thinking of using a gate mount from a YJ centered on the hood of my XJ to hold a spare.  I don't want it on the roof, I don't want it taking up 80% of my cargo area and I'm not keen on the way most swing away rear bumper mounts work (plus I feel the prices for them are absurd).  Just wondered if any of ya'all had experience with this type of mount -

Cheers
steve

If you go that route...open an account to store your citation money and be sure to fund it with each paycheck.

I've seen that a lot as well,  but that real estate is claimed by kayaks, canoes and the occasional mountain bike!  Going to keep it in the cargo area for the time being, and start looking for a good "off the back" mount.  Just not jazzed by some of what I've looked at, quality wise.  Maybe it's time to break out the McMaster Carr catalog, order some parts, grab some tubing and get bending and welding ....
