CJ7 tranny issues
« on: March 23, 2009, 12:41:24 pm »
Ok guys need your help. My buddy has a 1984 CJ7 with a straight 6 258cu in. With a 4 speed manual transmission .

Ok here's what's going on, when going through the gears, going into 3rd gear the shifter goes in fine but then its goes to far and pops out, but its still in 3rd gear.  Then we have to take the top part of the tranny and reset the shift rod into the cup it sits in.

I'm wondering how we should go about fixing this.

Your taking just the shifter off the top of the trans?
When you do this are you seeing a slug of steel with about a 5/8 hole or are you looking down into the guts of the tranny?

Ok the pc of steel about 1 inch X about 2.5 inches long w/ 5/8 hole is that what you have to "reset" and if so how are you resetting it?

No I have to take the shifter out completely and match the forks up in netural and then put it all back together and its good to go until I go into 3rd again

Sounds like the third/fourth shift fork may be bent, Or somthings up with shift rod or lug.
This does not sound like a T4 so I cant be as much help if it were.
