1999 Wrangler, whining when shifting gears
« on: July 13, 2009, 10:51:19 am »
I have a 1999 Wranger with manual 5 speed transmission.  Out of the blue it started making a high pitch whining noise when engaged in gear.  When I shift gears, the whining stops but then starts again when in the next gear.  I have added 3 quarts of gear oil to the transmission and it has not helped the whining noise.  ANY advice is appreciated.

Wow (X2)
They only hold like 3 or 4 Qts when dry, I think your looking at a complete rebuild at best, if you can save it at all.

dover as in Dover Pa. ?

sounds like a throw out bearing or clutch pinion bearing (little one in the flywheel)
build it, beat it, break it, fix it, repeat

i seen that after i posted, but you would think it would lock up if that low or be very hard shifting before it got that low.
but if it was the oil it should have lessened or stopped, either way the tranny is gonna need pulled.just the bearings are cheaper than a trans. and while its out there easy enough to check and since it happens while in gear not all the time points to an external bearing.
build it, beat it, break it, fix it, repeat
