XJ to YJ engine and trans swap
« on: August 27, 2009, 11:17:18 am »
I have a 94 XJ that the undercarriage has rotted beyond repair. So I am thinking about putting the 4.0 engine and auto trans in my 95 YJ 4 banger. Has anyone done anything similar or know of any problems I might run into?

Thanks, Jeff

I was told from anothers who have done it, it is cheaper and easier just to buy a YJ with the motor and trans already in it. Then swap your lift and such over from your 4 banger YJ. Heck it might even be cheaper to fix the XJ. You'd be surprised how rotted the underside can be before it's beyond repair. My passenger seat was practically held in by carpet and a prayer and I fixed mine for the most part. I pretty much had no choice on mine though, it was my second car and I had it just over a year before I looked under it (I was young and didn't know any better). But I still owed money on it and the people who sold it to me (Apple) wouldn't do anything so I was stuck.

On a side note, I probably wouldn't buy from them ever again. say this because what happened with my Jeep and I worked at one of their dealerships for 2 years. Some shady stuff passes through their shops.

Sorry what I meant to say was…“are there any BIG problems?” The rad and comp are small problems but the trans is another story. What is the problem with the trans?  I can’t imagine buying another Jeep would be cheaper than combining the two I already own. As far as fixing my XJ there is carpet and undercoating holding the seats in, it has been rolled and the unibody is almost going. Not to mention the radio doesn’t work  :P

try jeep forum they had a huge write up about it. but trans from a four wont work or the transfer case which means diff. drive shafts and such.
