Should I or Shouldnt I?
« on: February 28, 2008, 09:43:02 am »
I have a "thud" at times that I'm pretty sure is related to the angle of my rear driveshaft....I'm lifted 4" with no tranny drop....right now I'm thinking of going with rear upper adjustable control arms....I have a $100 cert that I got at last year's show....I know, I always seem to get something decent but I spent $100 to get it....anyways, I am thinking of doing that first to take care of the problem before dropping $500 on a SYE and new driveshaft....

Just looking for some adviice either yea or nay....

Thanks,
Jim

It depends on where you are getting the noise.  If your driveshaft is making the noise at the t-case end, then adjustable rear upper arms won't correct the problem.  Adjustable upper arms will help if the lower u-joint is the one that is making the noise.  You will just have to watch your pinion angle.  You don't want to get your pinion nose pointed too high.

In all honesty, the best way to correct the problem is a SYE kit and CV driveshaft.  T-case spacers will work but you lose an inch of ground clearance.  Stock skid plates are already shovelish, so lowering it another inch only makes them worse.

Driveshafts and "thud" just doesn't sound rite to me, I think it may be something else.

The SYE will benefit the most and all but cure.
You're angles are all out of wack Jim, I've looked at your Jeep. I told you this many, many, months ago too.
You inquired about SYE information and we told you what to do.

Inquire...Read...Absorb...Read AGAIN if needed...

Yea, you are right Rick....I just need to do the SYE and new driveshaft....

SO, besides the SYE and the driveshaft....any other things I have to replace while I'm doing that?  I dont want to buy the SYE and shaft only find out I need some other item to make everything work!

Told MaryAnn that I needed to drop some $$$$$ on the Jeep....she didnt really say anything....I take that as a "whatever", you are going to do what you are going to do.

Well, at least YOU told her before hand.....I never say a word to Nancy until afterwards and ONLY if she sees something or asks which is hardly ever anyway.

She's really only ever asked "When is it going away for good?"

LOL!  I've tried that in the past and when she would find out, shit hit the fan!  Like when I dropped $400 on my espresso machine....and it's a refurbished one at that!   ;D

I've been putting a ton of cash into her Audi....nothing serious, brakes, ABS, stuff like that....problem is, I dont feel comfortable working on her car....I really do wish she would have let me get her a Wrangler back when we got that Audi....oh well....

So I take I really dont need much else to do the SYE-driveshaft install?

You will need adjustable upper control arms still to correct your pinion angle.

C2kraft,
Yes he has a TJ

And my most recent reply to Nancy just two weeks ago was this: "Soon...I'm just having a hard time picturing the future without Jeeps in my life".

Now some of you guys will understand the reason I married my 2nd wife... I'll admit that the big boobs got my attention, but she came with a YJ! ;D Of course, I have to complete the mods I promised on "her" YJ before I can move on to my CJ8 project, but at least I get to wheel the YJ while it is in the "process"! ;D She already got a decal from "Sticky Lee" that says "This is NOT My Husband's Jeep!" She's waiting for me to finish so she can put it on! ::)

Ok....good....I'm glad I asked....

So, SYE, driveshaft, rear upper control arms....is that the list?  I'm trying to figure out how much I'll need to spend for this on parts....

Also, dont beat me up for this, if I just go with the rear upper control arms for right now, will that get me by till I can "afford" the SYE and driveshaft?  I do have a credit card with a high limit I was going to get rid of......maybe not!!!  :)
