Vibration ????
« on: December 13, 2009, 03:31:38 pm »
Hi All,

On the way home from our club meeting my rig started a very noticeable vibration.

Accelerating some vibration. Slowing no vibration

Cruising at 30-40 MPH most noticeable vibration almost like driving on small rumble strips.

No clunking noises when starting or stopping.

Any ideas??

One of the (big) vibs I was getting was from the Front DS, and only from 45mph and up. It seemed that the garage that "did' my Lube just didn't grease the front shaft ??? So the Slip Joint was unbelievably warn and sloppy :o In fact I could reach up and shake the DS back and forth (not while driving, of course). The next time you're out and this starts, just put it in 4wd and see if it stops or lessens. Mine did, that's how I figured it was in the front half of the drive train. I ended up getting it rebuilt down (for me) at Quiggly's.  You can crawl under and check both DS's to see if the Slip Joint has lateral play in it.

Maybe not, but just a thought...

Maybe the Tuna lost so much weight that he can't hold it down and with those 'winged" fenders it wants to fly...  ::)

Took it out again.

At 25 MPH it starts under normal acceleration, it stops when I get off the gas. It only vibrates when on the gas, even if it's slight pedal.

Nothing when I start out, nothing when coasting.

Take a close look at the U-joints with the recently added lift I would be suspect of drive line angles. It doesn't take very long to burn one out. Or if it had some wear on it the increased angles finished it off.  Check this sooner than later cause if it breaks it can take out the T/C.  Most times when the joint starts failing you will get a slow speed squeak. If it's not the joints make sure the axle U-bolts are still tight.  Good luck

DEATH WOBBLE?    no not angie either.

Nope, I didn't mess with Charlie's Jeep--I had my own mechanical problems today.  Hope you get it figured out, Tuna!

P.S. Thanks to all who stopped to help, give advice, and call to see if I got home OK.  It's nice to know that some people really care!

I do have a SYE in the rear, did that a few years ago preparing for the new lift.

I have a little squeak now and then and must have a U-joint taking a crap on me someplace.

I put the thing up on jack stands and wiggled and wobbled and shook and turned wheels and I can't tell nothin! Everything is a tight as a Nuns whatever.

I'm just gonna have to wait and see what falls out and then fix it. It came on real sudden and has changed characteristics since it started yesterday.

Yours Truly,
Dazed and confused.

Charlie,

If your 35's fall off, I'll store them on my jeep for you. ;D.  Actually, I think you're front heavy with that winch - your new rear bumper wasn't heavy enough.  Again, I can store that winch on my jeep as well. ;)

In all seriousness, the suggestions on U-joints might be on the money.  Prior to doing my front axle U-joints, I had a slight vibration at 55-60 mph, not much and not above or below.  I always thought it might have been tire wear, but it went away after I did the u-joints.  Could it be the hub units are seated better?  Probably not, so it might very well have been the u-joints.  Did not touch the driveshafts at all, just the front axle u-joint replacement.
