Tapping
« on: September 02, 2012, 08:10:45 pm »
I have a 97 ZJ with a tapping noise coming from the driver side engine. Anyone ever really figure out what this could be?

sure its not an exhaust leak the manifolds are known to crack right there alot, is it upper or lower motor. could be a lifter (upper motor) or a bearing (lower motor). also if you wheeled thru deep mud could be something in the starter ring area.
build it, beat it, break it, fix it, repeat

I will start with the exhaust manifold gasket. After hearing some uglies bout what this tap could be , would a 97 cherokee 4.0 be the same as a 97 grand cherokee 4.0?

Oil is fine. Since I had this jeep I replaced tranny and transfer case. Putting in some LUCAS oil treatment tonight. Gasket on Saturday if time permits.

Does the noise only occur at startup, or the entire time that you're driving it?  Mine makes a nice sound at startup, but then that's it.  (Probably a stuck lifter).  Mt. Zion Offroad checked mine out and they said that I could just keep driving it as is.  Joel (Mt. Zion) has an XJ like mine withe the same issue, and he still wheels it.
